## Biography

Peter J. Hammond, also credited as P. J. Hammond or Peter Hammond, is a British screenwriter and novelist born in 1934. He began his television career in the 1960s writing for BBC police dramas including *Dixon of Dock Green* and *Z-Cars*, on which he served as script editor from 1969 to 1970. He also wrote for *The Sweeney* (1975) and *The Professionals* (1977).

Hammond created the science-fiction series *Sapphire & Steel* (1979–1982) and the sitcom *Lame Ducks* (1984). His later credits include numerous episodes of *The Bill*, several for *Midsomer Murders* (1997) and two for *Torchwood* (2006). He published his first novel, *Downtimers*, in 2018.
