## Fi1m on Peter Kay

> Peter Kay makes ordinary northern characters feel like people we already know. We rate him as an ensemble actor, especially with someone to answer back, though even his warmth cannot make an unnecessary scene worth keeping.

PC Mackintosh's northern voice fits comfortably into *Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit* (2005). Peter Kay is useful casting here: his comedy draws on the ordinary business of work and family, and he makes a supporting character feel familiar. We like him among other characters, where that recognisable voice can contribute without having to provide the whole evening's entertainment.

That instinct was established in the mockumentary *That Peter Kay Thing* (2000) and developed in *Phoenix Nights* (2001–2002). Co-written with Dave Spikey and Neil Fitzmaurice, the latter gave him Brian Potter and Max within a working men's club ensemble. He could build several characters out of the same social surroundings. The settings and jobs mattered because they gave the performers something specific to share.

Nick Park and Steve Box's *The Curse of the Were-Rabbit* makes good use of that ability to belong in a company. Its smallest gestures are precise, and Gromit's silent exasperation is more than enough to justify our time. Mackintosh supplies another recognisable northern character without becoming the main attraction. The plot stretches to fill a feature, but the affection and care survive the stretching.

*Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl* (2024), directed by Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham, shows the limit of that usefulness. Kay returns as Chief Inspector Mackintosh, alongside Lauren Patel's P.C. Mukherjee, but Mark Burton's police detours keep taking us away from Wallace and Gromit. We grew impatient because Wallace and Gromit's exchanges were doing more interesting work than the police strand. Neither voice performer is at fault. It is a warm, funny film we recommend, with passages that better casting could not fix.

For a fuller sense of Kay's acting, we would turn to *Peter Kay's Car Share* (2015–2018), which followed those larger television ensembles with a two-hander built around everyday car journeys. As John, opposite co-star and co-writer Sian Gibson, he has the conversational rapport that makes ordinary exchanges worth hearing. The appeal is in how the pair talk together. Start there if the familiar voice has made you curious about the actor.
