## Biography

Peter R. Newman (4 June 1926 – 22 February 1975) was an English television screenwriter. Born in Ilford, Essex, he served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. After the war he wrote for radio and trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts before working in repertory theatre.

His best-known credits include the television play *Yesterday's Enemy*, which he adapted into a 1959 Hammer film, and the six-part *Doctor Who* serial *The Sensorites* (1964). *The Sensorites* was his only contribution to the series and his final screen credit. He subsequently experienced writer's block and worked as a porter at the Tate Gallery in London.

Newman died in 1975 from a cerebral haemorrhage following a fall at work. A 2012 documentary, *Looking for Peter*, examined his life and career.
