Peter S. Beagle is an American novelist and screenwriter. He was born on 20 April 1939 in New York City. He wrote his first novel, *A Fine and Private Place*, while studying at the University of Pittsburgh, from which he graduated in 1959.

Beagle is best known for the novel *The Last Unicorn* (1968) and its 1982 film adaptation, for which he wrote the screenplay. His other screen work includes the 1978 animated film *The Lord of the Rings* and the teleplay for the *Star Trek: The Next Generation* episode 'Sarek' (1990). He has received a Hugo Award (2006), a Nebula Award (2007), the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement (2011) and the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award (2018).
