Overhead lighting and carefully arranged frames are characteristic of Phil Abraham's work, rather than heavy reliance on close-ups. His background in cinematography helps explain the attention to how light can suggest a character's mood. We value that care, particularly when several actors have to make a scene work together. It is a useful qualification for a director working across ensemble television, where individual performances need to belong to the same programme.

Abraham moved from cinematography into directing on *The Sopranos* (1999–2007), directing his first episode in its final season. Phil Abraham is an American cinematographer and television director. He worked on all six seasons of *The Sopranos*, initially as a camera operator, then as a cinematographer and later as an episodic director.

Abraham has directed episodes of numerous series, including *Mad Men*, *Breaking Bad*, *Ozark*, *Daredevil* and *Your Friends & Neighbors* (2026). He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a One-Hour Series in 2008 for the pilot of *Mad Men* and has received further Emmy nominations for his work on *The Sopranos* and as a director on *Mad Men*.
