## Biography

Phil Bertelsen is an American director, producer and writer of documentaries and episodic television. Born and raised in New Jersey, he holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Rutgers University and an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he was a Johnson Scholar and Spike Lee Fellow.

His early short film *Around the Time* (1997) received a Student Academy Award. He has directed documentaries including *The Sunshine* (2000), *Who Killed Malcolm X?* (2020) and *The Picture Taker* (2022), and episodes of series such as *The Blacklist* (2021), *Madam Secretary* (2018), *The 1619 Project* (2023) and *Finding Your Roots*. Bertelsen is an Emmy and Peabody award winner.
