## Biography

Phil Boutelje (1895–1979) was an American composer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and conductor. Educated at the Philadelphia Music Academy, he served as a military bandmaster during the First World War and later played piano and arranged for the Paul Whiteman orchestra before moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s.

He worked as music director for Paramount Pictures and United Artists, composing scores for numerous films, often uncredited. His credits include music for *The Lady Eve* (1941), *You and Me* (1938), *The Great Victor Herbert* (1939) and *Hi Diddle Diddle* (1943). He received two Academy Award nominations for best original score. Boutelje joined ASCAP in 1930 and wrote popular songs including "China Boy" (with Dick Winfree). He died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.
