## Biography

Philip Hobel was an American film and television producer and film distributor. Born Philip Sherman Hobel in Manhattan, New York City, he graduated from Columbia College in 1942 and served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy during the Second World War. After the war he founded and operated the Cortland Furniture Company until entering the television and film business around 1970.

Hobel founded The Cinema Guild and, with his wife Mary-Ann Hobel, produced numerous television documentaries and series, including *The Fabulous Sixties* and *Here Come The Seventies*. He produced the feature film *Tender Mercies* (1983), which received five Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture. Hobel died in New York City on 23 October 2013.
