Born in Singapore in 1960, he moved to the United Kingdom at the age of five. He trained as a gymnast, becoming British Youth Tumbling champion, and later won the Men's British Tae Kwon Do title. Tan began his film career in 1980 as an actor and fight choreographer on *The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu*. He worked as an actor and trainer on *Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes* (1984) and trained Ke Huy Quan for *Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom* (1984), in which he also played the Chief Henchman (credited as Philip Tann). He joined the British Stunt Register in 1986 and has since worked extensively as a stunt performer, fight coordinator and second unit director on films including *Batman* (1989), *Lethal Weapon 4* (1998) and *Olympus Has Fallen* (2013).
