## Biography

Philippe Lifchitz (1919–2012) was a French film producer and director. He was born in the 8th arrondissement of Paris and died in Ivry-sur-Seine.

In the late 1940s or early 1950s he co-founded the production company Argos Films with Anatole Dauman, with whom he collaborated until around 1970. The company specialised in short documentaries and experimental films.

Lifchitz produced Alain Resnais’s *Night and Fog* (1956) and Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin’s *Chronicle of a Summer* (1961), as well as Agnès Varda’s *Along the Coast* (1958) and Joris Ivens’s *Valparaiso* (1963). He also directed several short films and later worked in television. In 1960 he received the International Critics’ Prize at the Tours International Short Film Festival.
