## Biography

Phyllis Brooks was an American actress and model. Born Phyllis Seiler in Boise, Idaho, on 18 July 1915, she began her career as a model, notably as the 'Ipana Toothpaste Girl'. She appeared in around 30 films, often as a B-movie leading lady in the 1930s and 1940s.

Her film credits include *In Old Chicago* (1938) as Ann Colby, *Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm* (1938), *Little Miss Broadway* (1938), *The Shanghai Gesture* (1941) and *Lady in the Dark* (1944). She also appeared on Broadway in productions such as *Stage Door* (1936–37) and *Panama Hattie* (1940–42). During the Second World War, she took part in a USO tour to the Pacific theatre.

In 1945 she married Torbert H. Macdonald, later an 11-term Democratic Congressman from Massachusetts, and they had four children. Brooks continued occasional stage and television work before retiring from public performances. She died on 1 August 1995 in Cape Neddick, Maine.
