He was the son of actors Georges Espinasse and Germaine Brasseur. The family acting tradition continued with his son Claude Brasseur and grandson Alexandre Brasseur. Brasseur appeared in films including *Port of Shadows* (1938), *Children of Paradise* (1945) as Frédérick Lemaître, *Le Plaisir* (1952), *Eyes Without a Face* (1960) as Professor Génessier, and *The Most Wonderful Evening of My Life* (1972). On 30 May 1927 he performed the spoken role of the Narrator in the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's opera-oratorio *Oedipus Rex*. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1966.
