## Fi1m on Pierre Coffin

> Pierre Coffin makes the Minions’ gabble intelligible through rhythm and tone. We rate him as a comic performer, though the films too often ask him to keep us amused while their stories go nowhere.

The Minions build a pyramid upside down, and Pierre Coffin gives them a gabble whose meaning needs no translating. In *Minions* (2015), scraps of Spanish, Italian and English run together without losing the joke. We laughed at that pyramid, and the brisk cutting keeps the joke from becoming laboured. Editor Claire Dodgson cuts each disaster short; Coffin’s nonsense is funnier here than the proper dialogue.

The useful balance was there in *Despicable Me* (2010), which Coffin co-directed with Chris Renaud: Steve Carell’s Gru gave the Minions somebody to interrupt. Coffin could make a short burst of nonsense count without asking it to hold the whole film together. *Despicable Me 2* (2013), again co-directed with Renaud, gave them more room, and their jokes largely justified it. Even there, we were beginning to want fewer distractions and a stronger reason to care about Gru.

The move to leading roles exposed the limit of the act. Coffin and co-director Kyle Balda get roughly twenty delightful minutes out of *Minions* before the longer story becomes a strain. In their *Despicable Me 3* (2017), Coffin’s musical nonsense still has a pleasing rhythm, but each diversion makes an already crowded film harder to follow. His voice remains useful; giving it more time does not reliably make the film funnier.

In *Minions: The Rise of Gru* (2022), his vocal exertions give the kung-fu training a comic urgency: these fools sound committed to what they are doing. That helps a physical joke land without much help from the surrounding criminal complications. The superhero Minions in *Despicable Me 4* (2024) likewise make a rescue go wrong with the timing of a good silent comedy. Coffin voices every one, but cannot fix a film that keeps changing the subject.

His return to directing with *Minions & Monsters* (2026), co-written with Brian Lynch, finds a more suitable job for them in 1920s Hollywood. Their gestures and noises belong among silent-film cameras and sets, and for an hour the gags grow out of the work of making pictures. The later stretches are more familiar, though this remains the strongest standalone Minions film. Start with *Despicable Me*; come to this one for the first hour, when Coffin gives his creatures something better to do than merely be recognisable.
