## Biography

Pierre Unik (1909–1945) was a French screenwriter, poet and journalist. Born in Paris, he joined the surrealist group as a teenager and later became a member of the French Communist Party.

He wrote the narration for Luis Buñuel’s *Land Without Bread* (1933), on which he also worked as assistant director, and contributed to other films including *Life Is Ours* (1936) and *Le temps des cerises* (1938). During the 1930s he served as a journalist and editor for communist publications such as *L’Humanité* and *Regards*.

Mobilised in 1939, Unik was taken prisoner during the Second World War. He escaped from a camp in Silesia in early 1945 but disappeared in the mountains and was presumed dead on 27 February 1945.
