## Fi1m on Prunella Scales

> Prunella Scales makes comic authority look unforced: she can leave a flustered partner looking defeated without appearing to prepare a rebuke. We admire the precision of her Sybil Fawlty, but also the care that keeps the character from becoming merely a scold.

In *Fawlty Towers* (1975), watch how little Sybil needs to do while Basil becomes agitated. Prunella Scales gives her a steadiness that leaves John Cleese doing the flustering, and never looks as though she is waiting for her next opportunity to put him down. We laughed all the harder at his agitation because she would not join in. Her assurance makes him seem beaten while he is still speaking. It is an exceptionally funny performance, and its restraint is easy to overlook amid the commotion.

The early screen work includes Vicky Hobson in *Hobson's Choice* (1954), but the television breakthrough was *Marriage Lines* (1961), opposite Richard Briers. Those credits matter because Sybil can make the career seem to have begun with a single, fully formed comic character. Later came Queen Elizabeth II in *A Question of Attribution* (1991) and Aunt Juley in *Howards End* (1992). Scales kept working beyond the part by which she was most readily recognised, even if that part has tended to obscure the rest.

With Sybil, the voice is the obvious tool: crisp delivery, repeated calls to Basil, the telephone calls to Audrey. The greater skill is making those familiar habits belong to a woman rather than treating each as an invitation to laugh. John Cleese and Connie Booth supply carefully written comedy; Scales can hold her place in it without competing with Cleese's agitation. Booth's Polly attends to the practical problem beneath the noise, while Sybil's assurance makes Basil's behaviour look more foolish. Neither performance needs to advertise its precision.

There are limits to our pleasure in the programme, particularly when jokes at Manuel's expense go on too long. Scales's restraint is especially welcome in a comedy that can press a joke past the point of discomfort. She makes a formidable woman funny without requiring us to find her ridiculous, and that is a substantial part of why the partnership works. Start with *Fawlty Towers*, then give *A Question of Attribution* an evening of its own.

## Biography

She received a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett's *A Question of Attribution* (1991).

Scales was appointed CBE in 1992. With her husband, the actor Timothy West, she presented the documentary series *Great Canal Journeys* (2014–2019). She died in London on 27 October 2025, aged 93.
