## Fi1m on Quincy Tyler Bernstine

> Quincy Tyler Bernstine makes authority interesting by leaving us uncertain about the person exercising it. We rate her patient, unsentimental work in *Furious*, where an odd, clever FBI veteran is allowed to remain difficult to read.

Nora Washington takes her time in *Furious* (2026), and Quincy Tyler Bernstine never asks us to find that charming. Her FBI veteran is odd, difficult to read and usually the cleverest person present. Bernstine gives her none of the little tics that announce an eccentric character and wait for our approval. We warmed to the series when it slowed down, because her unhurried performance gave us someone whose thinking we wanted to follow. She helps turn a lurid revenge thriller into a programme worth staying with, even when its pacing tries our patience.

Her stage work has repeatedly asked for that kind of restraint, with complicated feelings carried in ordinary lines. In *Well, I’ll Let You Go* (2025), she plays Maggie, expressing grief through small emotional shifts rather than raised voices. Before *Furious*, her screen work was often supporting or recurring, from the nursing-home administrator in *Still Alice* (2014) to *Power* (2017–2020). Her deadpan delivery suits an administrator or an agent, though a small part can only reveal so much. *Furious* gives her a major series-regular role and the time to let a character emerge gradually.

In Elizabeth Meriwether’s *Furious*, that extra time is put to good use, though not consistently enough. The series is two episodes too long, and our interest in Nora cannot make every stretch necessary. Bernstine has a useful counterweight in Rossum, whose Alice has to be frightening and pitiable at once. Their performances have to work at a distance for much of the run; Bernstine’s calm makes a useful contrast with Alice’s more troubling demands on our sympathy.

What we value here is how little she presses us to like Nora. There is a risk that casting her as the capable professional becomes a shortcut for giving a scene weight. The better use is to let her make that professional a little strange, as Meriwether’s series does. Start with *Furious*, provided a good performance is reason enough to forgive the slow stretches.
