## Fi1m on Rachel Keller

> Rachel Keller plays women who keep their distance and make you understand why. As Syd Barrett in *Legion* she gave a series built on unreality one thing worth believing in; we would like another showrunner to trust her the way Noah Hawley did.

Watch what Rachel Keller does with her arms. As Syd Barrett in *Legion* (2017), a patient on a psychiatric ward who will not let anyone touch her, she keeps them folded, or tucked, or a half-step further from David Haller than the frame seems to want. Dan Stevens plays David as a frightened man who apologises for everything, and Keller gives him someone to be careful around. Then the pilot puts them in a hospital corridor and lets them kiss, and the corridor comes apart. We sat forward. The series had spent forty minutes teaching us to believe nothing, and Keller had spent the same forty minutes making Syd's distance so plain that when she closed it, it counted.

Noah Hawley found her first. She was one of the Gerhardts in the second run of *Fargo* (2015), a daughter in a crime family that was eating itself, and the part got her noticed for the period accent and for how much fear she let show underneath it. Hawley then made her the female lead of *Legion*, which ran from 2017 to 2019. Since then the work has been steady and mostly in other people's shows: *The Society* (2019), Samantha Porter in *Tokyo Vice* (2022 to 2024), Sonya opposite Tom Hanks in *A Man Called Otto* (2022), *Butcher's Crossing* (2023).

The casting has a pattern. She is asked, again and again, to be the self-sufficient young woman inside a family or an institution that does not deserve her, and she does it without asking us to admire her for it. Her own account of the job is that she tells a story "through my body and my voice", and that is the right order. The accent and the lines arrive after the posture has already told you where she stands.

The caveat is that we know her best from one series, and she stayed for all twenty-seven episodes of it, including the nineteen we thought it did not need. Syd is the still point of *Legion*, and a still point has less to do once the writing around it stops knowing where it is going. The films since have been supporting parts, and supporting parts do not tell you whether an actor can carry ninety minutes on her own.

Start with the first eight episodes of *Legion* and watch her stand in a doorway deciding whether to come in. Someone should build a series around that decision.
