## Biography

Rachel Roberts (20 September 1927 – 26 November 1980) was a Welsh actress. She studied at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and made her film debut in *Valley of Song* (1953).

She is known for her performances in *Saturday Night and Sunday Morning* (1960) as Brenda, *This Sporting Life* (1963) as Mrs. Margaret Hammond, *Murder on the Orient Express* (1974) as Hildegarde Schmidt, *Picnic at Hanging Rock* (1975) as Mrs. Appleyard, *Foul Play* (1978), *Yanks* (1979) as Mrs. Clarrie Moreton and *When a Stranger Calls* (1979) as Dr. Monk. She won BAFTA Awards for Best British Actress for the first two of these films and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for *This Sporting Life*.

Roberts was married to actor Rex Harrison from 1962 to 1971.
