He studied acting at the Fridl-Leonhard Studio in Munich and began making films in 1969 after working in theatre. He directed, wrote and appeared in *Fox and His Friends* (1975). He directed, edited and appeared in *The Marriage of Maria Braun* (1979), and wrote the screenplay, composed the music and designed the production for *Ali: Fear Eats the Soul* (1974). Other films include *The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant* (1972), *Lola* (1981), *Veronika Voss* (1982) and *Querelle* (1982).
