Born in New York City, he graduated from Columbia University with a law degree before turning to acting. He was the older brother of actor Frank Morgan and the father of actress Claudia Morgan. Morgan made his stage debut in 1909 and appeared in silent films from 1915. His film roles included Debrulle in *Anthony Adverse* (1936), Commander of Paris in *The Life of Emile Zola* (1937), Raymond Wrede in *The Kennel Murder Case* (1933), Dr. Rhinehart in *Sleep, My Love* (1948) and David Thayar in *Song of the Thin Man* (1947).
