He directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the 2024 film *Nickel Boys*. His directorial debut was the 2018 documentary *Hale County This Morning, This Evening*. Ross was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1982 and grew up in Virginia. He studied at Georgetown University and earned an MFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design.
