## Biography

Ray Aghayan was an Iranian-American costume designer born in Tehran in 1928. He moved to Los Angeles as a young man and began working in television costuming in the 1950s before moving into feature films.

His film credits include *Father Goose* (1964), *Our Man Flint* (1966), *Doctor Dolittle* (1967), *Lady Sings the Blues* (1972) and *Funny Lady* (1975). He collaborated frequently with Bob Mackie, his professional and personal partner, and designed costumes for stars including Judy Garland, Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand. Aghayan also worked on numerous Academy Awards telecasts and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1984 Summer Olympics.

He received three Academy Award nominations for costume design and shared the first Primetime Emmy Award given in the category, for the 1967 television film *Alice Through the Looking Glass*. Aghayan died in Los Angeles in 2011.
