## Biography

Ray Rigby (1916–1995) was a British screenwriter and novelist. He wrote for British television series in the 1950s and 1960s, including an episode of *The Avengers* (1961). His screenplays for *The Hill* (1965) and *Operation Crossbow* (1965) are among his best-known works.

Rigby drew on his own service as a private in the British Army during the Second World War, including time spent in field punishment detention centres, for the screenplay of *The Hill*, directed by Sidney Lumet. The film received the Best Screenplay award at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival and a Writers' Guild of Great Britain award the following year; it was also nominated for a BAFTA. He later published a novel based on the same story.

In 1972 Rigby moved to Mexico, settling in Guadalajara, where he lived until his death.
