## Biography

Ray Smith (1 May 1936 – 15 December 1991) was a Welsh actor. He is known for his role as Detective Superintendent Gordon Spikings in the television series *Dempsey and Makepeace* (1985–1986).

Smith appeared in many British television series, including as George Barraclough in *Sam* (1973–1975) and as Detective Inspector Percy Firbank in *Public Eye*. His final role was as Charlie Norris in the 1992 television adaptation of *The Old Devils*.

He died of a heart attack in December 1991 while filming *The Old Devils* and received a posthumous BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actor in 1992.
