## Fi1m on Rebecca Front

> Rebecca Front makes people under pressure funny without making their distress negligible. We rate her most highly when a comedy gives her someone to defend, as *The Thick of It* does with Nicola Murray.

Nicola Murray is under pressure in *The Thick of It* (2005), and Rebecca Front makes the discomfort matter as much as the joke. She gives Murray enough feeling for the insults to register as cruelty, rather than just clever lines. We felt for her, because Front keeps the hurt apparent even while the programme invites us to enjoy the abuse. Front is funny here without asking us to stop taking Murray seriously.

Her work with Armando Iannucci runs from the sketch comedy of *The Day Today* (1994) to the character roles of *The Thick of It* and *Avenue 5* (2020). Alongside that comedy, *Lewis* (2006–2014) gave her the straight dramatic role of Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent. Authority figures and professionals under pressure recur in her work, but the job title is less interesting than how she makes us notice the strain.

Iannucci's ensemble in *The Thick of It* gives that approach room to work. Peter Capaldi gets the attention, but Front, Joanna Scanlan and James Smith supply different responses to the onslaught: Murray's pain, Terri Coverley's restraint and Glenn Cullen's indignation. Front does not need to make Murray blameless to make her worth caring about. Her contribution helps when the programme's relentless abuse starts to feel repetitive, because we remain interested in how Murray will cope with it. Without that concern, the insults would become tiring much sooner.

Supporting parts suit an actor this attentive to what other people do to a character. Front has favoured the quality of scripts over lead status, and there is no need to treat that choice as a shortcoming. We would welcome more parts that give her as much to work with as Murray, rather than merely requiring someone to look exasperated. Start with *The Thick of It*, and pay as much attention to the person being insulted as to the person delivering the line.
