## Fi1m on Reda Kateb

> Reda Kateb gives supporting characters a humanity that difficult films need. We value his quiet intensity, especially in *Zero Dark Thirty*, though the repeated outsider roles can make his work look narrower than the doctor and musician parts suggest.

As Ammar in Kathryn Bigelow’s *Zero Dark Thirty* (2012), Reda Kateb plays a tortured detainee in a film largely occupied with the people pursuing Osama bin Laden. He gives the supporting part a humanity that the account of the hunt needs. We were troubled by the torture scenes, because their matter-of-fact staging makes suffering seem like routine work. Kateb keeps the person being hurt from becoming merely another stage in the investigation.

*A Prophet* (2009) gave him his breakthrough as Jordi, working with Jacques Audiard. It is a prison drama we rate highly for its attention to power, despite plotting that sometimes grows too tidy. Tahar Rahim makes Malik’s education convincing; Kateb’s supporting presence belongs within that larger account of how people survive among those who control them. These early parts suit his quiet intensity, but they also explain the danger of being cast repeatedly as the outsider whose life the film only partly allows us to know.

The move into *Hippocrates* (2014), as the doctor Abdel Rezzak, and then the lead in *Django* (2017), as Django Reinhardt, broadens that impression. A doctor and a jazz musician take him beyond the tough figures with whom he was first associated. *Django* also puts his physical and musical acting to use, giving us something to appreciate beyond the mystery that his quieter roles can suggest.

Kateb is an actor we would watch for the supporting work before the leading roles. He gives damaged or marginalised people substance without insisting that every film stop to explain them, and that is particularly valuable in Bigelow’s tense, patient thriller. The caveat is that casting him repeatedly for toughness or mystery risks making the performances seem interchangeable before he has had a chance to do anything. Start with *A Prophet*, and pay attention to the people around Malik.

## Biography
