## Fi1m on Regé-Jean Page

> Regé-Jean Page is a convincing romantic lead and a dryly funny straight man. We rate his poise, especially in *Bridgerton*, though we would like more parts that give him a reason to lose it.

Xenk does not acknowledge the joke. In *Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves* (2023), Regé-Jean Page plays the paladin so straight that every line Pine throws at him fails to disturb his composure. We laughed at his refusal to give Pine even a flicker of recognition. Page leaves the effort to the person trying to get a reaction, which is a useful way of being funny in a film full of bickering. Our reservations about its noisy, overlong stretches do not disappear when he arrives.

His American breakthrough came as Chicken George in *Roots* (2016), before *Bridgerton* (2020) brought international recognition and made his romantic assurance the attraction. As Simon Basset, he makes the familiar courtship conventions enjoyable without pretending that the programme is aiming for understatement. Chris Van Dusen’s series gives that performance a useful setting, with Ruth Gemmell and Jonathan Bailey making family pressure and belonging matter beyond the central couple. The dialogue can labour, but Page suits the programme’s direct approach to desire.

*Black Bag* (2025) puts him among people whose good manners are less reassuring. For Steven Soderbergh, he plays Col James Stokes, a spy who wants a promotion and is sleeping with Naomie Harris’s service psychiatrist, Dr Zoe Vaughn. At the dinner table, his ambitions sit alongside Tom Burke’s Freddie Smalls drinking too much and Marisa Abela’s Clarissa Dubose saying whatever occurs to her. The pleasure is in watching an ensemble make those competing interests clear without slowing down the parlour game. It is a neat use of Page’s self-possession, though the film’s mystery is less gripping than its dinner conversation.

These parts give us good reasons to keep watching, but they also suggest what we would like to see him tested on next. Assurance is useful; a character who cannot maintain it might ask more of him. His deadpan work as Xenk makes more comedy worth pursuing, provided the writing does not mistake dignity for a complete personality. Start with *Bridgerton*, where his confidence has a romance to sustain.
