## Biography

Reginald Mills (also credited as Reginald Cuthbert Mills) was a British film editor and occasional director. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in modern languages in 1934 and began his career as an assistant editor, working with David Lean on early films before serving with the Army Kinematograph Unit during the Second World War.

Mills edited more than thirty feature films. He is best known for his long collaboration with Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, including *A Matter of Life and Death* (1946), *Black Narcissus* (1947), *The Red Shoes* (1948) — for which he received an Academy Award nomination — and *The Tales of Hoffmann* (1951). He later worked extensively with Joseph Losey on films such as *The Servant* (1963) and *King and Country* (1964), and with Franco Zeffirelli on *Romeo and Juliet* (1968) and the television miniseries *Jesus of Nazareth* (1977), earning BAFTA nominations for both.

Mills also directed the ballet film *The Tales of Beatrix Potter* (1971). His final credit was as consulting editor on Zeffirelli's *The Champ* (1979). He died in London in July 1990.
