Born in the St George's, Hanover Square district of London, he made his screen debut as a child in the 1913 film *David Copperfield*, billed as Eric Desmond. His family emigrated to the United States in 1914 and settled in New York, where he appeared on Broadway in productions including *Evidence* (1914), *Hay Fever* (1925) and *Soldiers and Women* (1929). Sheffield moved to Hollywood in the late 1920s and played numerous character and supporting roles in films.
