## Fi1m on Renée Zellweger

> Renée Zellweger makes affection believable by letting doubt interrupt it. We rate her most highly when she has room to think on screen; the fluster and pratfalls can become routine, but a held smile can still catch us unprepared.

In *Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy* (2025), Zellweger lets a bedtime smile last an extra second. Her Bridget is with Mabel, and the effort of keeping cheerful becomes visible without being explained. We were moved more than we expected by how long she held that smile. We value her most in moments like this, when she gives a familiar character something to do beyond the familiar routine.

She was already making small hesitations count in Cameron Crowe’s *Jerry Maguire* (1996). As Dorothy Boyd, she makes affection for Tom Cruise’s Jerry seem like a decision that involves thought, even when the script wants love to cure his shortcomings. Janusz Kamiński’s warm cinematography supports the romance, and Joe Hutshing’s editing handles the shifts between comedy and earnestness. Crowe still gives the subplots too much space and keeps explaining what his actors have made clear. Zellweger makes us curious about Dorothy’s judgement of Jerry, which gives us a reason to stay through the surplus advice.

That film brought stardom, and *Bridget Jones’s Diary* (2001) established her as a romantic-comedy lead. She moved into singing and dancing with *Chicago* (2002) and period drama with *Cold Mountain* (2003), then had fewer major roles in the early 2010s. Playing Judy Garland in *Judy* (2019) marked a return to prominence. Across these changes, vulnerable characters seeking connection have remained a recurring interest. We find that vulnerability most convincing when she lets us see a woman weighing up another person, as Dorothy does, rather than simply asking us to find her endearing.

Bridget also shows how the habits can harden. In *Mad About the Boy*, the flustered public appearances and school-gate pratfall sometimes look like obligations, and a mother of two falling over tells us little about who she has become. Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Scott Walliker helps: their scenes allow two adults to listen to each other, and Zellweger has less need to keep her face busy. Go to *Jerry Maguire* first; return to Bridget if a few tired routines are an acceptable price for those quieter scenes.
