## Fi1m on Rhys Darby

> Rhys Darby makes well-meaning incompetence worth spending time with. We like him best when his enthusiasm has quieter performers to work against, as in *Flight of the Conchords*, where he is funny without making anyone else look dull.

Murray Hewitt has enthusiasm for managing a band that his competence cannot justify. In *Flight of the Conchords* (2007), Rhys Darby lets that be funny without making Murray someone we are invited to despise. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement keep their performances so unforced that a busier supporting actor could easily spoil the balance. Darby supplies welcome company and leaves their quiet absurdity intact. We warmed to Murray because his eagerness survives his limitations, and Darby never needs to shout over his co-stars to make us notice him.

That restraint is worth noticing in a comic whose stand-up uses mime, exaggerated movement and self-generated sound effects. *Flight of the Conchords* was his breakthrough, followed by a major film part opposite Jim Carrey in *Yes Man* (2008) and a run of supporting roles and voice work. It is easy to see why a casting director would reach for him when a character needs to be odd but well-meaning. The risk is repetition: amiable eccentricity can become a job description, with little else for an actor to do.

*Flight of the Conchords* remains our clearest recommendation because it gives that eccentricity useful company. McKenzie and Clement allow the audience to find the joke, and Darby's timing works within that low-key approach rather than trying to hurry it along. The ordinary plots sometimes leave too much waiting between songs; Murray is welcome, but his presence cannot make every stretch equally rewarding. What works is the willingness to let these limited people remain likeable. Darby belongs in that ensemble without having to make every scene about Murray.

There are other uses for his enthusiasm: in *What We Do in the Shadows* (2014), Anton is a werewolf pack leader who objects to swearing. *Our Flag Means Death* (2022) marks the more substantial change, giving him the lead as Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate, and a more complex character to play. Taika Waititi works with him on both. Start with Murray, then try Stede: Darby deserves scripts that ask him to do more than turn up and be peculiar.

## Biography

Rhys Darby is a New Zealand actor and comedian. He served in the New Zealand Army before forming the comedy duo Rhysently Granted in 1996 and developing a solo stand-up act featuring physical comedy, mime and sound effects. He received Billy T Award nominations in 2001 and 2002.

Darby is best known for playing Murray Hewitt, the band manager, in the television series *Flight of the Conchords* (2007–2009). He has appeared in films including *Yes Man* (2008), *What We Do in the Shadows* (2014), *Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle* (2017) and *Jumanji: The Next Level* (2019), and in television series such as *How I Met Your Mother*, *The X-Files* and *Our Flag Means Death* (2022–2023), in which he played Stede Bonnet.
