## Fi1m on Richa Chadha

> Richa Chadha makes the family exchanges in *Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1* worth as much attention as the crime. We value that ability to make an abrasive character matter, though her casting too often asks for the same toughness.

In *Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1* (2012), Nagma's family exchanges deserve the attention that the criminal business keeps demanding. Richa Chadha makes sure of it. Manoj Bajpayee's Sardar Khan has the swagger to dominate a crowded film, but Chadha gives those domestic scenes an importance of their own. We cared about them more than we expected, because she stopped them feeling like pauses before the next criminal appointment. It is the clearest reason to value her: she can make a character matter inside a busy ensemble.

That breakthrough with Anurag Kashyap also brought a restriction: she was subsequently stereotyped as older or maternal figures, limiting her chances of leading roles. It is a dispiriting response to a performance whose strength was making the domestic scenes count. The recurring demand for outspoken women and female dons makes sense, given her physical assurance and comic timing. It also risks treating toughness as all she has to offer. Bholi Punjaban in *Fukrey* (2013) puts that toughness to comic use, but the casting pattern deserves caution.

*Masaan* (2015), with Chadha as Devi Pathak, provides a useful departure from that pattern in a leading dramatic role. Her ability to play vulnerability matters as much as the forcefulness. The attention she gives to body language helps keep even abrasive characters recognisably human, which is more useful than merely making them imposing. The later move into period drama and dance sequences as Lajjo in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's *Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar* (2024) offers another direction. We would rather see those opportunities develop than watch another variation on the formidable woman.

Kashyap remains our starting point for her work. *Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1* has crowded plotting, and its pace leaves some of the ensemble less firmly established. Her Nagma is one of the people we keep following, even when the film makes following everyone difficult. Start there, provided you are prepared to concentrate on who belongs to which family.

## Biography

She has since appeared in supporting roles in *Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela* (2013) and *Section 375* (2019), and took a leading role in the drama *Masaan* (2015), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
