## Biography

Richard Carle (born Charles Nicholas Carleton) was an American stage and film actor. He was born on 7 July 1871 in Somerville, Massachusetts, and began performing in amateur theatricals in the late 1880s before making his Broadway debut in 1891. He appeared in numerous musical comedies on stage in New York, London and Chicago, and later worked as a playwright and stage director.

Carle made his screen debut in the silent film *Mary's Lamb* (1915) but did not return to films until moving to California in 1924. From the mid-1920s until his death he worked predominantly as a character actor in both silent and sound films, appearing in more than 100 productions. His credits include *One Hour with You* (1932), in which he played Henri Dornier – Private Detective, *Ninotchka* (1939), *The Great McGinty* (1940) and *The Devil and Miss Jones* (1941). He died of a heart attack on 28 June 1941 in North Hollywood, California.
