## Fi1m on Richard Gere

> Richard Gere is at his most persuasive when his reserve gives another actor room to move. We like the charm without the fuss, though the same restraint can leave us wondering what his characters feel.

In *Pretty Woman* (1990), Richard Gere holds back while Julia Roberts does the livelier work. As Edward Lewis, he gives her someone to push against without making every exchange a contest for attention. We warmed to the pair because his quietness made their attraction feel unforced, even when the arrangement between a wealthy executive and a sex worker ought to have required more persuasion. Edward is the less interesting character, and Gere does not somehow fix that. He makes the man's company pleasant enough for the romance to work.

That composed presence had been established well before Garry Marshall paired him with Roberts. Terrence Malick's *Days of Heaven* (1978) gave him an early major role, followed by the leading-man breakthrough of *American Gigolo* (1980) and *An Officer and a Gentleman* (1982). A quieter period in the mid-1980s preceded the resurgence of *Pretty Woman*. Gere can suggest a private life without spelling out each thought or feeling. That can also be frustrating when we need to understand more about the man he is playing.

Marshall keeps the comedy in *Pretty Woman* light enough for affection to develop, which suits Gere's unhurried approach. But Edward's reserve also helps a thinly written man pass for a complicated one. J.F. Lawton's screenplay asks us to accept expensive company as evidence of a better life, and the casting makes that proposition easier to swallow than it deserves. We recommend the romance with that caveat, rather than pretending Gere has supplied the depth the writing lacks.

The courtroom drama of *Primal Fear* (1996) and the musical performance of Billy Flynn in *Chicago* (2002) offered other uses for his controlled presence. Those parts are worth remembering when considering an actor so often cast as the suave romantic lead. Later work has taken him into independent films and television, including *MotherFatherSon* (2019) and *Oh, Canada* (2024). For a first encounter, we would still choose *Pretty Woman*, provided its faith in money does not spoil the pleasure of watching two actors give each other space.
