## Biography

Richard Glazar (born Richard Goldschmid) was a Czech-Jewish survivor of the Treblinka extermination camp. Born in Prague in 1920, he was deported first to the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1942 and then to Treblinka, where he was held for ten months as one of the forced labourers known as Arbeitsjuden. He escaped during the prisoner uprising on 2 August 1943.

After the war, Glazar studied economics in Prague, Paris and London. He testified at the Treblinka trials in Düsseldorf in 1963 and 1971. In 1979 he was interviewed by Claude Lanzmann for the documentary *Shoah* (1985), in which he appeared as himself describing his experiences at the camp. He later published a memoir, *Trap with a Green Fence: Survival in Treblinka* (German edition 1992; English 1995). Glazar died in Prague in 1997.
