## Biography

Richard Hageman was a Dutch-born American composer, conductor, pianist and occasional actor. He studied at the conservatories of Amsterdam and Brussels, and worked as a conductor and coach at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Chicago Civic Opera before settling in Hollywood in 1938.

Hageman composed or contributed to the scores of around twenty films. He is noted for his work on several John Ford productions, including *Stagecoach* (1939), for which he shared an Academy Award for Best Original Score, *The Long Voyage Home* (1940), *Fort Apache* (1948), *3 Godfathers* (1948), *She Wore a Yellow Ribbon* (1949) and *Wagon Master* (1950). He also appeared in small acting roles in films such as *The Great Caruso* (1951) and *Rhapsody* (1954).

Outside film, Hageman composed two operas and more than sixty art songs, of which 'Do Not Go My Love' remains among the best known.
