## Biography

Richard Hartley (born 28 July 1944) is an English composer and musical arranger. He grew up in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.

In the 1970s he began a long association with Richard O'Brien, originally playing in the four-piece band for *The Rocky Horror Show*. He arranged the score for the London stage production and its film adaptation *The Rocky Horror Picture Show* (1975), as well as *Shock Treatment* (1981). His other film scores include *Bad Timing* (1980), *Sheena* (1984), *Stealing Beauty* (1996) and *The Life and Death of Peter Sellers* (2004).

Hartley has composed extensively for television, including the incidental music for the *Doctor Who* story *Mindwarp* (1986). He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries or a Movie for *Alice in Wonderland* (1999).
