## Biography

Richard Rankin is a Scottish actor. Born Richard Harris on 4 January 1983 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, he trained at Langside College in Glasgow and adopted his mother's maiden name professionally.

He began his career in Scottish television, appearing in *VideoGaiden* and gaining attention for various roles in the sketch series *Burnistoun* (2009–2019). Subsequent credits include Captain Thomas Gillan in *The Crimson Field* (2014), Roger Wakefield MacKenzie in *Outlander* (from 2016), Father Hrothweard in *The Last Kingdom* (2017), and DI Elliott Carne in *Thirteen* (2016). He has also appeared in *Burnt* (2015) and *Midsomer Murders* (2018).

Rankin has a background in theatre, including work with the National Theatre of Scotland, and has a brother, Colin Harris, who is also an actor.
