## Biography

Richard Rodgers (28 June 1902 – 30 December 1979) was an American composer of music for stage and screen. He was born in New York City and collaborated extensively with lyricists Lorenz Hart and, later, Oscar Hammerstein II.

Rodgers wrote the scores for numerous Broadway musicals, including *Oklahoma!* (1943), *Carousel* (1945), *South Pacific* (1949), *The King and I* (1951) and *The Sound of Music* (1959). He also contributed music to the 1965 film adaptation of *The Sound of Music*. He was the first person to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony and Pulitzer Prize.

The 46th Street Theatre on Broadway was renamed the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 1990 in his honour.
