## Biography

Richard Schayer was an American screenwriter, also credited as E. Richard Schayer. Born in Washington, D.C., on 13 December 1880, he was the son of Colonel George Frederick Schayer and the writer Julia Schayer. He trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, worked as a journalist and served in the military during the First World War before beginning screenwriting work in 1916.

Schayer contributed to more than 100 films over four decades, with credits including the screenplay for *Trader Horn* (1931), scenario or story work on *Frankenstein* (1931) and *The Mummy* (1932), and the story for *The Cameraman* (1928). He held an executive position at Universal Pictures under Carl Laemmle. Schayer died in Hollywood, California, in March 1956.
