## Fi1m on Richard White

> Richard White gives Gaston the full, assured voice his vanity demands, and makes the certainty ridiculous. It is a performance we warmly recommend, though his screen reputation rests largely on that one part.

Gaston sounds as though disagreement is something that happens to other people. In Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale’s *Beauty and the Beast* (1991), Richard White gives him such untroubled vocal confidence that Belle’s lack of interest becomes a pleasure in itself. The performance is funny because White takes the man’s opinion of himself seriously. There is no need to add a knowing apology for his vanity. We hear just how pleased Gaston is with himself without being asked to share his assessment.

His theatre and opera background helps explain how comfortably he handles a character who expects to be heard. White’s stage work stretches back to the late 1970s, and he created the title role in *Phantom* (1991), the same year as his defining screen part. For Gaston, that ample sound is useful before we have considered a word of the lyric. A boast delivered tentatively would be a different joke, and White gives this one the conviction it needs.

Howard Ashman, the film’s lyricist and a creative guide during White’s recording sessions, gives that confidence plenty of help in ‘Gaston’. The song supplies musical encouragement so lavish that the man’s vanity briefly seems a reasonable response. We laughed because White’s certainty and the tune’s enthusiasm leave so little room for anyone to question him. Linda Woolverton’s screenplay and Paige O’Hara’s voice performance give Belle the necessary independence, and White makes her resistance more satisfying by sounding so sure of his appeal. The film’s comic bustle can crowd the romance, but his performance earns its place in it.

Later appearances as Gaston in *House of Mouse* (2001–2003) kept White attached to the same screen character, while his stage work included the *Jekyll & Hyde* revival (2013). His screen reputation rests overwhelmingly on Gaston, so we would be cautious about making larger claims for his acting from this performance alone. There is enough precision here to reward another listen even when the songs are familiar. Start with *Beauty and the Beast*, and listen to how little doubt White allows into a man who could use some.
