## Fi1m on Rob Reiner

> Rob Reiner trusted writers and actors, and we rate his clear, unshowy storytelling. His supporting work in *Sleepless in Seattle* has a related virtue: he helps stop a sentimental romance becoming precious.

In *Sleepless in Seattle* (1993), the tiramisu gag interrupts the yearning with adult uncertainty. We laughed because the film briefly allows someone to be confused when it is otherwise so certain about love. Reiner plays Jay, joining Ross Malinger and Rosie O’Donnell in keeping the comedy sociable. The supporting cast gives Nora Ephron’s romance some welcome changes of pace. That willingness to be ridiculous matters in a film whose faith in destiny can become a little oppressive.

Reiner brought a similar trust in performers to directing. His feature debut was the mockumentary *This Is Spinal Tap* (1984), followed by the coming-of-age drama *Stand by Me* (1986) and the fantasy adventure *The Princess Bride* (1987). There is no single visual style across his films by which to identify him. We value his ability to make an ensemble work together and keep the story clear.

*When Harry Met Sally...* (1989), *Misery* (1990) and *A Few Good Men* (1992) took him through romantic comedy, psychological thriller and courtroom drama. Working with writers including Ephron and Aaron Sorkin, he gave dialogue and character priority over camera flourishes. Sorkin’s play provided the basis for *A Few Good Men*, where Reiner’s handling of confrontation is a particular strength. The later films drew more mixed reviews, so those early successes are no guarantee for everything bearing his name.

As Sheldon Flender in Woody Allen’s *Bullets Over Broadway* (1994), Reiner is again part of a comic ensemble. We like the film’s brisk treatment of artistic vanity, with a caveat for its familiar theatrical types and occasional stiff staging. Dianne Wiest and Chazz Palminteri give the comedy its bite.

We would start with *When Harry Met Sally...* for his directing and *Sleepless in Seattle* for his acting. The latter earns much of its sentiment through Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, while Reiner helps relieve it. Allow some patience for the leisurely pace; the belief in destiny needs more.
