He was born on 26 February 1914 in New York City and died on 3 May 1986 in Los Angeles. Alda began his career in vaudeville and burlesque before appearing on Broadway, where he starred as Sky Masterson in the original production of *Guys and Dolls* (1950), winning a Tony Award, and in *What Makes Sammy Run?* (1964). His film roles include portraying George Gershwin in *Rhapsody in Blue* (1945) and Allen Loomis in *Imitation of Life* (1959). He moved to Italy in the early 1960s and appeared in numerous European films, while also working in American television.
