## Biography

Robert Arthur (born Robert Arthur Feder) was an American screenwriter and film producer. Born in New York on 1 November 1909, he attended Southwestern University and the University of Southern California before entering the oil industry. He began screenwriting at MGM in 1937 and served in the US Army during the Second World War, producing training films.

After the war Arthur joined Universal Pictures, where he produced numerous films including several Abbott and Costello comedies and the first *Francis the Talking Mule* picture. He also produced *The Big Heat* (1953) and *The Long Gray Line* (1955) for Columbia Pictures before returning to Universal. Among his later credits were *Operation Petticoat* (1959), *Lover Come Back* (1961), *That Touch of Mink* (1962), *Father Goose* (1964) and *Shenandoah* (1965). In 1965 he signed a lifetime contract with Universal.

Arthur was married to Goldie Appleby, who had worked as an executive secretary in the film industry. He died in Beverly Hills, California, on 28 October 1986.
