## Fi1m on Robert Beatty

> Robert Beatty makes officials and officers seem like people who expect to be obeyed. We value his plain delivery and dependability, though the repeated casting in authority roles left too little room for surprise.

Robert Beatty looks at home with a rank or a job title. In *2001: A Space Odyssey* (1968), he plays Dr Ralph Halvorsen, the lunar base administrator, a job that suits his familiar screen authority. We value his straightforward delivery: he makes an official seem credible without asking us to admire the acting. That is useful in a film whose people can feel remote. His dependability is worth appreciating, even when we might wish the casting had given him something less familiar to do.

His early substantial film work offered more than rank. As Dennis, the loyal friend in Carol Reed's *Odd Man Out* (1947), he had a part built around a personal attachment. Beatty recalled Reed asking him to reduce his acting until he felt he was simply saying the lines; that plainness is what we value in him. He plays Lt William Bush alongside Gregory Peck in *Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N.* (1951), an early example of the military supporting roles that suited him.

Television brought a leading role in *Dial 999* (1958–59), followed by fewer film opportunities as his face became more familiar. Later parts kept returning him to tough men and blustering authority figures. An admiral in Blake Edwards's *The Pink Panther Strikes Again* (1976) carries that authority into comedy, but changing the genre does not necessarily change what an actor is asked to provide. We would have welcomed more parts that asked him to work outside those habits.

Kubrick's casting of Beatty in *2001* is a reason not to dismiss an actor for being familiar. We were unsettled by the remoteness of the film's people, which Kubrick's exact, patient filmmaking gives us time to notice. Beatty's casting makes sense within that reserve, though his presence is not our chief reason to recommend the film. Its slow pace is earned, and we would recommend it even to those who usually avoid science fiction. Start there, then try *Odd Man Out* for Beatty under a director who kept asking him to do less.
