## Biography

Robert Clavel was a French production designer and art director. Born in Paris on 15 October 1912, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and entered the film industry as an assistant decorator on Robert Bresson’s *Les Dames du bois de Boulogne* (1945). He became a chef décorateur from the late 1940s and worked on nearly eighty French films and co-productions until the late 1970s.

Clavel’s credits include *The Count of Monte Cristo* (1954), *A Monkey in Winter* (1962), *Any Number Can Win* (1963), *Greed in the Sun* (1964), *Weekend at Dunkirk* (1964), *The Tattoo* (1968) and *Belle de Jour* (1967). He collaborated extensively with directors Henri Verneuil (twelve films) and André Cayatte (ten films). He died in Paris on 14 July 1991.
