Robert Crais is an American novelist and former screenwriter. Born on 20 June 1953, he moved to Hollywood in 1976 and began writing for television series including *Baretta*, *Quincy, M.E.*, *Hill Street Blues* (1981), *Cagney & Lacey* (1982) and *Miami Vice* (1984). He received an Emmy nomination for an episode of *Hill Street Blues*.

In the mid-1980s Crais turned to novels. His first book, *The Monkey's Raincoat* (1987), introduced the private investigator Elvis Cole and won the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Original and the Macavity Award for Best First Novel. He has since written numerous best-selling crime novels featuring Cole and his partner Joe Pike, as well as stand-alone thrillers such as *Hostage* (2005). Crais lives in Los Angeles.
