## Biography

Robert Elliott was an American character actor. Born Richard Robert Elliott in Columbus, Ohio, he appeared in over 100 films and television productions between 1916 and 1951. In the sound era he was largely seen in supporting roles and bit parts. He played R.J. Brannegan in the 1931 film *Five Star Final*.

Elliott originated the role of Sergeant O'Hara on stage in Somerset Maugham's *Rain* (1922), opposite Jeanne Eagels. He appeared as Detective Crosby in *Lights of New York* (1928), the first all-talking feature film. Among his later screen credits were the Yankee Major in *Gone with the Wind* (1939) and Police Lieutenant Dundy in *The Maltese Falcon* (1931). He was married to Ruth Thorp from 1920 until his death in Los Angeles in 1951.
