## Biography

Robert F. Boyle (also credited as Robert Boyle) was an American art director and production designer. Born in Los Angeles on 10 October 1909, he died there on 1 August 2010.

After graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in architecture, he began working in 1933 as a sketch artist and draftsman at Paramount Pictures. He later became an art director at Universal. Boyle collaborated repeatedly with Alfred Hitchcock, serving as associate art director on *Saboteur* (1942) and *Shadow of a Doubt* (1943), and as production designer on *North by Northwest* (1959), *The Birds* (1963) and *Marnie* (1964).

His other credits include production design on *Fiddler on the Roof* (1971) and art direction on *The Thomas Crown Affair* (1968) and *Cape Fear* (1962). He received four Academy Award nominations for art direction and was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2008.
