## Biography

Robert Harling is an American writer, producer and director. He graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and obtained a Juris Doctor from Tulane University Law School, though he pursued acting in New York rather than a legal career.

After the death of his sister Susan in 1985, Harling wrote the play *Steel Magnolias*, which opened off-Broadway in 1987. He adapted it into the screenplay for the 1989 film of the same name. His other screenwriting credits include *Soapdish* (1991), *The First Wives Club* (1996) and *Laws of Attraction* (2004). He also wrote and directed *The Evening Star* (1996).

Harling owns Oaklawn Plantation in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
